Post Covid World - Dawn of a New Age
Just like human life was never the same after the two world wars or even the great depression, life post Covid would never be the same. Even the 2008 global recession pales in comparison to this pandemic faced all over the world. I would like to share my insights of how life post covid can turn out to be.
One thing that none of us can deny is that the govt. investment on health care services is going to increase by leaps and bounds. Covid has shown that inspite of tremendous development in science and technology, humans at large are fragile beings. So, the healthcare industry needs to keep itself a step ahead and well prepared of maladies akin to Covid that might crop up in the future. The importance of having a sound health insurance is clearly highlighted in today's scenario. A famous singer passed away a few days back due to Covid complications. His hospital bill amounted to a massive Rs 3 crores ($ 400,000). So, people who ignored the insurance of a good health cover are clearly valuing it more than ever now.
Not only employees, but huge corporates are also benefitting a lot by the WFH model as infrastructural costs can be slashed to a very large extent. MNC's in Bangalore have given up about six million square feet of land due to slow down of operations and due to more increased work efficiency of employees from home. Many companies have decided to drop off their previous plans of building new corporate parks for this reason. Also, companies can have a better pool of employees since they would be able to hire people from faraway places and have them on board as remote employees. Offices will have to be redesigned for better physical distancing of employees and home cum offices would also start to be developed by realtors. Constructing sound proof cabins and better internet connectivity are a few examples of this.
The formal attire that would often consists of black blazer, shoes and trousers may soon be a thing of the past and employees attending online meetings wearings boxers or pyjamas may be the new normal. Several companies are now realising that online meetings do save a lot of time and money. Due to this reason, teleconferencing apps like Zoom have had their fortunes built upon.
Education sector is also witnessing a tremendous change with more than $2 billion Dollars already being pumped into EduTech startups like Byjus and Vedantu. These companies have gained a stronghold with people seeing full time at-home education as a viable alternative that can protect their children from the Covid scare. Though I still opine that children sitting in front of the monitor for too long isn't a good idea and children learn a lot more things in a normal school as opposed to what we think. Key qualities like team spirit, empathy, competency etc. get developed only in a real school as opposed to a virtual school. Moreover sports and games will be highly compromised by a full time online education paradigm shift.Fitness and health industry are going to gain a lot since most people are getting to realise that there are no shortcuts to fitness. There is no magic pill that works for everyone. One has to eat right, exercise timely and have a sound sleep like a baby. During the worldwide lockdown, a large number of people started taking functional fitness seriously as opposed to aesthetic fitness. Functional fitness would be highly emphasised as it would lead to higher endurance, low body fat, higher agility and ultimately more energy. Yoga, Zumba, Dancing, Pilates and swimming are a few ways of developing functional fitness. Foods having better nutritional values would also get more attention.
To Sum it up, Covid has been a game changer and the dynamism it has brought to our lives isn't limited to what's mentioned above. But way beyond that. Few changes like more emphasis on hygiene and fitness would be for the better but merging professional and personal lives in my opinion would not be too good for the human psyche which requires atleast some amount of social stimulation and even worse would be the case of online tutored kids. But who knows what the future holds for the world as we can only speculate and hope for a better and safer tomorrow
